About

Department of Historical GIS

At the Tallahassee-Leon County Historical GIS Department , we are pioneering the use of Geographic Information System (GIS) software and advanced techniques to illuminate and explore the past. Our mission is to transform historical research by bringing a spatial dimension to understanding our local heritage.. Our work involves:

  • Analyzing Historical Data and Spatial Relationships We meticulously examine a diverse range of historical data, from old maps and census records to property deeds and archival documents. By integrating these into a GIS framework, we uncover complex spatial relationships that reveal how geography has profoundly shaped historical events, socio-economic patterns, and the evolution of communities within Tallahassee and Leon County over time.
  • Leading Collaborative Research Initiatives We believe in the power of interdisciplinary collaboration. We actively lead and participate in research projects that unite historians, geographers, archaeologists, urban planners, and other experts. Together, we analyze rich historical datasets, develop innovative methodologies, and collectively create shared, robust digital resources that push the boundaries of historical inquiry.
  • Visualizing History Through Dynamic Mapping Our core strength lies in translating complex historical narratives into intuitive and dynamic maps. By visualizing historical data on interactive digital platforms, we empower researchers and the public to uncover subtle patterns, identify significant trends, and understand relationships that might remain hidden through traditional research methods alone. This visual approach fosters new insights and interpretations of our shared past.
  • Creating Accessible Historical Data and Research A key pillar of our department is democratizing access to historical knowledge. We are dedicated to making our historical data, research findings, and analytical tools readily available to the public. Through user-friendly online platforms, comprehensive digital archives, and engaging interactive exhibits, we ensure that the rich history of Tallahassee and Leon County is discoverable and meaningful for scholars, students, and curious citizens alike.

By bridging the gap between historical scholarship and cutting-edge geospatial technology, the Tallahassee-Leon County Historical GIS Department is committed to preserving, interpreting, and sharing our unique local history in unprecedented ways.
